Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ,The Iron Man of India
‘Sardar Patel’, known as “Bismarck of India” (Iron man of India), was born on October 31st 1875, Nadiad, Gujarat, India. He was a leader of ‘ Indian National Congress’ who played supreme role in the independence movement and guided India’s integration into a united, independent nation. For his great services to the nation Sardar Patel was conferred with Bharat Ratna in 1991. He seemed to be an ordinary person to every one, but had strong will power and vision.
He was a successful barrister of Ahmedabad,Gujarat, but gave up his practice in order to fight for country’s freedom. He was a great admirer of Mahatma Gandhi and joined ‘Civil Disobedience Movement’ on his advice. The relationship between Gandhiji and Vallabhbhai was concretely defined when Gandhiji was elected as the President of the Gujarat sabha and Vallabhbhai as secretary, in 1917. They propagate the idea of wielded weapon of “Satyagraha” (or truth force). Mr. Patel with his steady efforts towards the unity of our country had brought great success for the unification of India. He united a scattered nation without much violence and his unique achievement was to create the independent unified India, called ‘Bharat’.
When he was young, he once suffered from the boil. A man in his village that used to cure boil with the help of hot iron, was very famous for the cure. So, sardar went to him for the cure. On receiving him, the man heated iron rod until it grew into red. But when he saw how young Vallabhbhai is, person hesitated to perform the task. On seeing that the confidence of a man was shaking sardar fearlessly responded, “what are you waiting for? the iron will get cold; please hurry up”. At last Vallabhbhai picked up the glowing rod and burnt the boil himself. Those who watched him were shocked but there was not even a single trace of pain on the boy’s face. This incidence was instilled in Patel’s mind as irresistible desire to fight injustice.
